iPhone 11: here's what we know so far about the next Apple mobile release
Is Apple going to break open the box with colour iPhones this year?
It’s nearly nine months since Apple released its 10th anniversaryiPhone, the iPhone X, in its Apple Park headquarters.
And, whilst the notch, Face ID, and animojis have been keeping us busy since then, now the world is looking forward to the next iPhone release in 2018.
At the moment, the biggest rumours seem to centre on what colour the new iPhone will be. Is this the year Apple returns to the 5C design with different colour offerings?
Here’s everything we know so far about the future iPhone 11.
Next iPhone 2018 release: the iPhone 11?
At the moment, we’re not even sure the next iPhone 2018 release is going to be called iPhone 11.
If Apple releases an update to last year’s iPhone X (pronounced 10), then it's likely it will be called iPhone 11 or iPhone XI.
This device is predicted to be sized at 6.5inches, so bigger than the X, and with an OLED screen.
However, there could also be an iPhone 9 release, which would be an update on the iPhone 8.
The iPhone 9 will be in the style of the X, so featuring the notch we now know and love and with an LCD screen.
But, we're going to focus on the iPhone 11 for now.
iPhone 11 release date
Whilst we’re not sure what the name is going to be, an iPhone 11 smartphone will most certainly be released in September 2018.
Apple loves a big September keynote to announce its latestsmartphones and this year will be no different.
If past years are anything to go buy, it’s likely the event will take place in early September with the new phones going on sale before the end of the month.
That means you could have a shiny new iPhone 11 before October 2018.
What will the iPhone 11 look like?
A new iPhone 11 will probably be an updated version of the iPhone X. According to trusted Apple analyst, KGI’s Ming Chu Kuo, this year’s iPhone will have largely the same design as the iPhone X.
This means we can expect an almost bezel-less phone (the frame around the screen), a notch to house the camera on the front, and a bright OLED screen.
As well, the new phone will be sized at 5.8inches, the same as the iPhone X.
Other rumours are suggesting Apple could return to its 5C days by offering the new iPhone 11 in a range of different handset colours, such as purple, green or even blue and orange.
According to 9to5Mac, the cheaper iPhone device aka the iPhone 9, is going to be available in grey, white, blue, red and orange.
A red iPhone isn't really a break from the norm, as Apple regularly releases a red device every year as part of its partnership with the HIV/AIDs charity (RED).
But blue and orange is certainly a step away from the usual iPhone colours of black, space grey, white and gold.
Considering Apple has always prided itself on its design, as well as simplicity, it seems slightly rouge for it to suddenly start releasing iPhones in different colours.
But who knows what Tim Cook will pull out of his Apple hat in September.
What features will the iPhone 11 have?
Apple is expected to keep Face ID, its facial recognition technology, on the iPhone 11, but is reportedly going to drop TouchID, the fingerprint recognition tech, on this smartphone.
Some rumours suggest that Apple could be looking to introduce a triple-lens rear camera, similar to the Huawei P20 Pro smartphone, on future devices.
However, this might not be coming till 2019 so don’t hold your breath.
And the new iPhone 11 will hopefully have a better battery than its predecessor. The next smartphone could have a 3,300-3,400 mAh battery, which has 25 per cent more capacity than the iPhone X.
Goodbye to the Lightning port
After "courageously" removing the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, it looks like the next iPhone could see another radical departure in design.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is planning on removing the Lightning port, which is the charging port from the iPhone 11.
This means the new device could rely completely on wireless charging.
In order to achieve this, however, the company needs to release Airpower, its wireless charging device. When Apple created the iPhone X last year, wireless charging was still slower than traditional charging methods, so the company retained the Lightning port.
But as wireless charging gets better, it looks like the Lightning port will be going the way of the headphone jack.
How much will the iPhone 11 cost?
Prices for the iPhone X start from £999 for the 64GB version, which was criticised at the time for being so high.
But, Apple has never been one to shy away from high prices.
If the iPhone is really an update on the X, expect prices to be pretty much the same, particularly if the company is going to release a lower priced, iPhone SE2 device, as well this year.
